Slight Uptick in US Mining Support Activities to End 2018

[Abstract]:
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported slight gains in support activities for mining in December.

U.S. mining employment showed little change to close out 2018, according to data released Jan. 4 from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Still, oil and gas extraction and support activities for mining saw some gains. The BLS classifies both under the “mining” category.

For the month of December, jobs in oil and gas extraction increased by 300. Jobs in support activities for mining, which had reported decreases of 2,400 in November, increased by 2,500 in December.

It’s yet to be seen what U.S. energy employment will do in 2019.

But with oil prices declining in late 2018, the Dallas Fed recently warned of weakened job growth in Texas in the first half of 2019.

The Dallas Fed’s quarterly energy survey revealed a slightly pessimistic outlook for energy firms in Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico amid depressed oil prices.

In addition, three energy companies reported to the Texas Workforce Commission that they would be cutting staff in the new year.
